The 2003 Chinese historical action film Warriors of Heaven and Earth follows a small group of men through the Gobi desert as they fight and die to protect a relic of the Buddha. One of the characters is Japanese– a very long way from home– and this track starts with some evocations of that culture before we feel him come in contact with the vastness and harshness of Western China.

The composer here is the great A. R. Rahman, who nicely fuses the various styles at work here.
